Project Astoria aims for developers to run "unchanged" Android binaries on Windows 10 Mobile

Image
The recent builds of the Windows 10 Mobile Technical Preview have for the first time included Microsoft’s new Android subsystem, part of Project Astoria, which would allow Android apps to be easily ported to Windows phones. How easily has been somewhat of a debate, with many believing this would not allow any form of sideloading of Android apps to Windows Phone. A recent job posting by Microsoft however suggests that Microsoft’s aims for Android apps are rather ambitious, and with the intent for developers to be able to published “unchanged binaries” to Windows phones. The post reads: Our Astoria team is delivering a set of new experiences for consumers and developers with the potential to make a huge difference for the Windows platform. The Astoria bridge enables Android developers to publish theirunchanged binaryto run as they are on the Windows mobile platform. Office Mobile apps for Windows 10 drops preview tag with the latest update

Image
Ahead of the release of Windows 10 (for PCs), Microsoft has released new updates for the Office Mobile apps for Windows 10. The latest update doesn’t seems to bring anything new, however, with the latest update, Microsoft removes the “preview” tag from all of the Office apps. For those interested, the latest update for the apps is 17.4229.10041.0. It’s worth noting that this doesn’t mean that Microsoft won’t update the apps in the near future. Online retailers in India to take advantage of Project Astoria to bring their Android apps to Windows 10 Mobile

Image
Like many others, some of us have been sceptical about Microsoft’s new bridge technologies helping to close the app gap, but it seems in areas where Windows Phone has a higher market share it is exactly what many companies have been waiting for. The Economic Times of India reports that Indian online retailers are planning to take advantage of Android app porting to bring their apps to a growing number of Windows Phone using customers.  Windows Phone has a 5% market share in India, with Counterpoint Research estimating there is 10.75 million people using Windows Phones there as of March 2015. Faaso’s, the food-on-demand chain which is moving away from its physical stores into apps, hasn’t updated its Windows app for months now. “As soon as portability is made available, we will update the Windows app, as we do have a loyal customer base there,” said cofounder Revant Bhate. Android-only food ordering app Spoonjoy has submitted its upcoming iOS app for review and is working on a Windows

Report: Microsoft to make Lumias for at least next two years

Image
If a report from Bloomberg has to be believed then new Lumia devices manufacturing and availability has a confirmed shelf life of only next two years. Microsoft is literally going for a test ride with new focused and smaller Lumia portfolio and Windows 10 Mobile for next two years.  The company expects to make its own phones for at least the next two years, said a person familiar with Nadella’s plans who asked not to be named because the plans aren’t public. Microsoft will try to play up its strengths in the markets it has chosen, such as corporate security and collaboration software for business customers  Instead of trying to sell as many phones as possible, Microsoft will concentrate on three categories: business phones, high-end models and value phones like the Lumia 520, which, at more than 25 million units sold, is the company’s best-selling device  It will exit markets and carrier relationships where it has not been successful yet, but US will be exception again.  The co

Microsoft set to close the majority of their Nokia Care service centres in Poland, possibly elsewhere

Image
One of the key attractions of Nokia and now Lumia handsets for buyers is the robust network of Nokia Care service centres all round the world.  It seems as part of Microsoft’s downsizing of their Microsoft Mobile business they will soon also be jettisoning this selling point.  WPWorld.pl reports from sources inside the Polish service sector that Microsoft is withdrawing contracts from their service network and will soon be closing 8 conveniently located service centres on Poland.  Sources from both Setel, an authorized repair centre, and Regenirsis, another, indicate that they will no longer be servicing Lumia handsets by the end of the year.  Instead all devices will likely go to central service centre in Bulgaria, which will likely cause turn around times to be significantly extended.  Windows Phone has a pretty high market share in Poland, and we wonder what effect this will have on sales there. WPWorld.pl also speculates that this may be a Europe-wide move, which I

VLC update this month to bring hardware decoding & rendering + new Direct3D11 module

Image
It seems an update that will go live this month for universal VLC app will bring much-desired hardware decoding & rendering feature. This is one of the most requested capability missing from VLC Windows Phone and Windows apps. It also seems that VLC team has replaced Direct2D video output by Direct3D11 module. WinRT The Direct2D video output was removed from the WinRT project and replaced by the new Direct3D11 module, we’ve been speaking of, in the previous weeks. This new module should be faster, and should allow hardware decoding and hardware rendering in the next releases. Stay tuned! One of the VLC devs has confirmed that the updated app is coming this month and while we hope he meant June, let us wait and watch. VLC WinRT: Direct3D11 is working! Hardware decoding and rendering nearly working as well! vNext this month (WP+W)! https://t.co/HUdowTmvIK — Thomas Nigro (@ThomasNigro) June 30, 2015 Source:NPU
