Windows Phone Fitbit app picks up another update

Image
Fitbit has been pretty busy with their Windows Phone app, updating it once again, only a week after the last major update.  Unfortunately version 1.6.214 comes without an updated change log, which suggests the usual bug fixes and performance improvement.  One feature I suspect which has seen some improvement is being able to add friends with the app, which seems to work well.  Unfortunately the device still does not support notifications and alerts from Windows Phones yet, but Fitbit’s developers are hard at work trying to make it happen, and are promising it as a future update.  Download Fitbit for Windows Phone from the Windows Phone Store here: http://www.windowsphone.com/s?appid=378ebdb6-f31f-4505-a00d-c460ef22e7ff

RM-1067, Dual-Sim Lumia 1330 imported to India for testing.

Image
We have earlier reported about Lumia 1330 (May not be the final  name) dummies arriving in India and surprisingly it was revealed as RM-1062, the variant with LTE  advanced support and in Zauba listing, it was mentioned as 3G duos. Now, RM-1067 variant has also been caught getting tested in India and this seems more probable as the variant for India because of its Dual-Sim support and the fact that it is a Asia bound variant.  It has also passed  certification in Indonesia. The Zauba listing for RM-1067 reveals the known 5.7 inch display apart from Dual-Sim support and a hint about the probable pricing that may be around USD 349 (Retail). source: NokiaPowerUser

Rumour: new Lumia with 3 megapixel is on the way!

Image
Some (probably many) would say there are already more than enough low end Windows Phones, but now NokiaPowerUser reports that another may be on the way.  The RM-1099 is a low-end Windows Phone that has previously been noted to be pass through Indonesian certification in January 2015 and that has also been imported into India according to Zauba.  According to NPU’s sources the device may be similar to the Lumia 435, but feature a slightly higher megapixel camera.  The rumoured specs include: •4-inch, 800 X 480 display •1 GB RAM •Dual-Sim support •Snapdragon 200 Dual-core processor •2.2 MP – 3 MP rear camera, 864 x 480 video recording (as compared to 2 MP camera of Lumia 435), possibly with autofocus. •VGA 0.3 MP FFC • 8 GB internal storage  However with the Lumia 435 already on sale in India, such a device will crowd Microsoft Mobile’s low-end line-up even more.  Source: ‪#‎Nokiapoweruser‬ ‪#‎WindowsCentral

Lumia 640 to be the name of RM-1072 and its family of variants. Read the key specs.

Image
The RM-1072 and its family of variants may be called Lumia 640 / Lumia 645 , when they will be launched gets revealed via two recent certifications. The certification in Brazil for RM-1109 reveals that the Lumia 640 Dual-Sim has a unique battery model BV-T5C.  Now, RM-1072 and RM-1077 that have just passed certification at FCC reveals that these two have the same battery BV-T5C.  So, it seems quite clear how Microsoft’s new Lumia naming scheme will bring mid-range specs to lower-mid range. We had exclusively reported about RM-1072 & its family (RM-1075, RM-1077) details as coming with 8.7 MP (PureView) camera, 8 GB storage and with 5-inch, 720p display. Read more about it here.  We also confirmed that it will have a Dual-Dim variant and RM-1077 was caught getting tested in India. RM-1072 has already passed certification in Indonesia. Now the FCC certification also reveals Lumia 1072 as the LTE and RM-1077 as the Dual-Sim variant.  Have a look at all the details that we

Windows Insider app updated

Image
Microsoft has updated the Windows Insider app to version 2015.218.528.3529.  The update appears to bring nothing new, and unfortunately does not t this minute increase the number of handsets supported.  It may however close the loophole that XDA-Dev has been using to force the Windows 10 Mobile Technical Preview onto unsupported handsets, so we suggest you update with caution if you intend to use this in the future.  If you are otherwise unconcerned you can find the updated app in the Windows Phone Store here: http://www.windowsphone.com/s?appid=ed2b1421-6414-4544-bd8d-06d58ee402a5

Lumia phones getting Extras + Info update, changes unknown

Image
Microsoft is pushing out another update today for its Extras + Info system app. Version 3.14.6.2 is now live in the Store, although there is no changelog besides the usual 'general fixes and improvements' listing.  In case you were wondering if this fixes the Lumia Cyan/Denim listing depending if you are enrolled in the Preview for Developers program, to our knowledge it does not.  The one thing we did notice was that the Firmware Update Notifier has been updated from 1.2.10.4 to 1.2.11.1. As to what changed with that notifier, we have no idea.  Regardless, go ahead and download the new version below! •Download Extras + Info for Lumia Windows Phones: https://www.windowsphone.com/s?appId=2377fe1b-c10f-47da-92f3-fc517345a3c0

India – Lumia Denim update now available for Lumia 525, 535, 620 and Lumia 720

Image
Yesterday we reported that the Lumia Denim update was due by the end of the month for those in India. So far, only the Lumia 520 has received the update in that country, with a broad swath of Lumia phones still waiting for the OS upgrade.  Today, Microsoft has gone and refreshed their update page with new additions to the Lumia Denim software release. Seeing as we are not in India at this time, we cannot confirm if the update is rolling out, but if not, it should be coming very soon.  The Lumia phones now eligible for Lumia Denim include: •Lumia 525 •Lumia 535 (dual SIM) •Lumia 620 •Lumia 720  Notably absent are the higher range phones like the Lumia 830*, Lumia 930 and Lumia 1520. However, we have confidence that those updates will be coming out sooner than later.  For now, let us know in comments if the update is live for you.  Source: MicrosoftIndia

Double-height Live Tiles may not make it to the final release of Windows 10 Mobile

Image
It has been gratifying to finally see them become reality in Windows 10 Mobile Technical Preview.  It seems however the feature is far from set in stone, with Gabriel Aul, the head of Microsoft’s Windows Insider program, tweeting that they are still up for discussion, with other Windows 10 Mobile Start screen features.  We already know that Microsoft is working on having both the new full-screen background and also wallpaper-in-tiles options in W10M, so the situation is clearly still in flux. There is of course also the long-standing rumours of exploding live tiles and a 3D user interface.  Source: WMPoweruser

Windows 10 phone preview builds are 'roughly' every month, Tile re-sizing options not definite

Image
Nearly a week ago, Microsoft unleashed an early release of Windows 10 for phones through their Insider preview program. Considering that Windows 10 is far from finished, there are a lot more questions than answers at this time for consumers as to the endgame for Microsoft's new OS.  Gabriel Aul, who has become the default spokesperson for the Windows Insider program, has taken to Twitter to respond to the myriad of inquiries from users. Here is a recap of some of the bits we have learned recently. •Windows 10 for phone preview builds go out once a month, "roughly" •New tile sizes, like the 'double tall' for People hub and extra-large for Cortana are experimental; no decision made yet on whether they will be used or not (users feedback is requested) •More tile sizes or designs may be forthcoming. •The Spartan browser is being tested internally, but nothing set yet for its release to public previews. When it meets certain criteria, it will be released

Xbox Games for Windows Phone 8.1 gets an update

Image
Microsoft has pushed out an update today for the Xbox Games hub for Windows Phone 8.1, but the new 2.0.1502.11021 version has no published change log. This likely means this is a minor update with some unnamed bug fixes.  The Xbox Games Hub allows Windows Phone users to access all of their games in one hub location, along with a number of other features. Lumia Indonesia account already teasing Lumia 1330 / 1335

Image
Microsoft Lumia Indonesia’s Facebook account is teasing a phone as “coming soon” that resembles to Lumia 1320in size and design. Not only this the teaser reads“Dual sim card buat yang smart!“that translates to “Dual Sim card made that smart”. So, the teaser seems clear enough to assume: Lumia 1320 successor with addition of Dual-Sim support is made for smart people and it is set to be announced soon. That Lumia 435 and Lumia 532 have already been announced leaves us with no known smartphone to be teased with Dual-Sim for Indonesia too. Dual-Sim 3G variant RM-1067 has already passed certification in Indonesia. We also know how Lumia 1330/ 1335(May not be the final name) with 5.7 inch display will bring both Dual-Sim and LTE support in a first to the Lumia range.  RM-1062 and many of its variants have been leaked in various certifications and we have,  Single Sim + LTE advanced variant: RM-1062, first for a Lumia.  Dual-Sim + LTE variant: RM-1065, again first for a Lumia.  Single Sim

Windows Phone 8.1 GDR2 goes to OEMs, may bring anti-theft mode

Image
While we are all pretty obsessed with Windows 10 Mobile, it will likely be half a year before the software ends up on our handsets. At the same time the long-awaited Windows Phone 8.1 GDR2 seems to be bubbling under, and official documentation has now shown up for the OS update on Microsoft’s Windows  Phone OEM dev centre. A variety of new features appear to be supported, but nothing ground breaking.  New is Video over LTE, support for additional languages including Bangla (Bangladesh), Khmer, Kiswahili and Lao, a new anti-theft policy, and a variety of other features which can be seen below. Microsoft has been promising am anti-theft feature to rival that of iOS and Android by the middle of 2015, suggesting we will see devices running the new update well before then. Software changes Customization and runtime configuration changes These customization and runtime configuration changes are new for Windows Phone 8.1 GDR2. Source: WMPU

First MSDN Documentation for Windows 10 controls arrive

Image
Developers can finally start getting their hands dirty with making Windows 10 (mobile) specific apps, as the documentation for the Windows 10 specific controls are finally documented on MSDN. The documentation includes controls for the Calendar view, Calendar picker, Split view, Relative Panel and Search box. At present only the Relative panel works on Windows 10 Mobile Technical Preview, but of course eventually all the APIs will be present on both versions of the operating system. The documentation can be seen at the links above. Thomas Nigro, the developer of VLC for Windows Phone, has explored some of the APIs in a blog post. Source: WMPU

Everything you wanted to know about Operator Billing in India.

Image
It was the end of 2014 when we reported that Idea Cellular subscribers in India can now buy app and games from the Windows Phone Store via operator billing (or carrier billing). Idea Cellular is India's 3rd largest mobile operator, with over 150 million subscribers.  Microsoft and Idea Cellular introduced operator billing on the Windows Store for Idea subscribers. This partnership enables Idea users on all Microsoft Lumia devices as well as all Windows-based smartphones across brands to access their favorite premium apps and games from the Windows Store and pay for them through integrated operator billing.  Unlike other parts of the world, credit card penetration in India is tiny and this in turn impedes the consumer purchase experience and limits app monetization. There are only 19 million credit cards in India, which is less than 2% of the total population of the country. Even adding debit cards to the mix pushes the number to only 350 million.  Globally, the Windows Sto

Microsoft includes option to delay updates on Windows 10 for Phone preview

Image
Some of you might be itching to grab the Windows Phone 10 technical preview but be unable due to lack of a supported phone or just because you are worried about bugs. Unless you are the latter, I’m afraid I can’t do much for you.  So far, no major bugs have been reported but not much can be said about the future. For this reason, Microsoft has included the ability to choose from two options when updating. As shown in the image above, you can choose Insider Slow or Insider Fast.  Insider Slow:  You’ll get prerelease builds of Windows 10, but you’ll get them a little after Insiders who select to recieve Fast updates. This could mean that more solutions are available for issues.  Insider Fast:  You’ll get prerelease builds of Windows 10 ahead of everyone else. This means you’ll see new things sooner, but there may be fewer solutions available for issues.  Remember, testers can also roll-back if needed. Hopefully both of these things should help relieve the stress of run

Windows 10 for phones will remind you of appointments even as you're shutting it down

Image
Here's a neat little feature that Microsoft has slipped into the new Windows 10 Technical Preview for phones. In Windows Phone 8.1, shutting down the phone gives you the simple, albeit pleasant "goodbye" message. But when you shut it down in Windows 10, you'll get a little reminder of your next calendar appointment.  The exact message reads:  "In case you forgot...(Appointment name, time, location)"  Not the most important new feature in the preview for everyone, but it's a really nice touch. If you're shutting the phone down you won't get your reminders on appointments, but at least with this you'll get a helpful reminder before hand.

Windows 10 for phone lets you swipe single notifications away in the Action Center

Image
One of the many smaller changes that are found in the Windows 10 Technical Preview for phones is in regards to the overhauled Notification and Action Center. On Windows Phone 8.1, users can swipe away notifications but only as a group based on the app. For instance, you can clear your Outlook email alerts, but it is all email or nothing.  However, in Windows 10, swiping to the right clears just the one notification instead of the whole group.  Such a feature of single-notification clearance is far from earth-shattering, but it is great to see it built into Windows 10.  Unfortunately, the two-finger swipe to clear all notifications is not yet present (nor are we sure it is returning). Users who wish to wipe all their notifications can, of course, still use the 'Clear All' button in the upper left area of the Action Center.  Earlier, we reported that you can expand notification messages to view the full snippet in today's preview.  Presumably Microsoft can –

Missing Cortana on Windows 10 preview for Phones. Here is how to get it back?

Image
If you are already running Window 10 for Phones preview on your supported devices and you are outside of US, you may be missing Cortana. But if you have used the getting Cortana (US) trick earlier on Windows Phone 8.1, you may have managed to get it back already. If not, you can get Cortana on your devices running Windows 10 for Phones preview by following below steps.  Step 1: Go to Settings—> Time & Language—-> Region and change Region to United states and regional format as “match phone language” in Settings —–> Region. Reboot the device/  Step 2: Go to Settings—> Time & Language—-> Language and add English (United States) first in Settings —–> Language. You will need to reboot the device for installation of the language pack.  It will ask for a restart and once rebooted, you should be able to use Cortana from the list of apps and you are good to go. Cortana is already present in the app list but unless you follow above steps you won’t be able

Microsoft will bring transparent tiles to Windows 10 for phones

Image
If you installed the Windows 10 Technical Preview for phones, you may have noticed that the start screen renders tiles differently from what we've seen in Windows Phone 8.1. Tiles that use the theme color were transparent in Windows Phone 8.1, allowing you to see the background image, but in Windows 10 for phones, the tiles are merely translucent. Check the number of bands for US & Ca
