New Office for Windows Phone or a bad Photoshop by Microsoft?

Image
Back in November, Microsoft released Office for iOS. As some of you may already know, the app looks much better than the Office for Windows Phone app. Microsoft has been criticized for this – however, Joe Belfiore from Microsoft recently promised that the Office team at Microsoft hasn’t ‘forgotten Windows Phone’. He also revealed that the company will share something new for Windows Phone users by the Chinese New Year (19th February). Now, Microsoft Colombia’s official Facebook account has posted a new photo promoting Office for Windows Phone. The status stated, “Edit your documents while you’re away from the office with mobile app #Office”. There wasn’t anything wrong with the status – except from the fact that the company may have used the Office for iOS’ screenshot on a Windows Phone. We can’t confirm if the screenshot on the device is the iOS app or if Microsoft  re-designed Office for Windows Phone to look exactly like the Office for iOS app. Microsoft will reveal more info ...

Microsoft’s new patent will make your phone less annoying when you’re sleeping

Image
Let’s be honest: it’s pretty annoying to change the brightness, volume and other stuff when you’re going to a theater or meeting. Of course, there is quiet hours on Windows Phone – but, Microsoft is working on a new feature, dubbed as “inconspicuous mode” which will make your phone less annoying and much smarter.  The patent suggests that the inconspicuous mode will be able to automatically change your brightness, mute sounds, and several other stuff when you’re in a theater or sleeping. It’ll also reduce the information on your lock screen. So how will your phone detect when you’re in a theater (or any other event)? Well, it’s pretty simple – the “inconspicuous mode” will be able to detect it using GPS, NFC and Wi-FI MAC addresses. That’s not all – it’ll also trigger the settings by gathering data from your calendar as well as browser history. For example, if you have an event on your phone’s calendar, the inconspicuous mode will be activated when you’re at the event. Th...

Microsoft may be bringing Lumia Camera 5 to all Windows Phones

Image
While the Lumia Denim update may have been a let down for most, with its most touted feature-Lumia Camera 5 – being unavailable to the bulk of most Windows Phones. This may be about to change in Windows 10 for Mobile. Twitter user Jessica Ledskinen tweeted that Microsoft is planning to make a version of Lumia Camera available in Windows Phone. For proof, she posted screenshots of version of Lumia Camera running on her Samsung Ativ S.  This is not an unprecedented move. As Microsoft Mobile merges with Microsoft proper, it would make sense for the company to kill off duplicate and competing applications like Mixradio. This is most prevalent in the camera app category, where besides the default Microsoft Camera app, wee have a host of other Lumia apps that really should all be rolled up into one. The camera app would also benefit from the speed boost that the current Microsoft Camera enjoys as well as an increased level of integration with the underlying OS. ...

Not all Lumia devices will be receiving firmware for Lumia Denim confirms Microsoft

Image
We had previously theorized that the extras + info bug found in Lumia devices which had update 1 was caused by the fact that Lumia Denim and Update 1 would be the same for all devices and this seems to be case. In a recent FAQ post, Microsoft confirms that only select Lumias will get firmware updates with Lumia Denim. From the FAQs  Lumia Denim is the marketing name for latest Lumia software update, which is a combination of firmware, OS (operating system) and Lumia exclusive applications. Exact contents coming with Lumia Denim vary depending on the device model, and some devices are not requiring new firmware for the new features to be enabled, so firmware can in some cases remain unchanged. Translation: If your phone is not an 830, 930/Icon or 1520 and you’re already on the latest OS builds via the Preview for Developer app, there’s nothing to wait for . source: Microsoft #ShamaNoor

Lumia Denim–will we get it before Windows 10?

Image
Along with the Lumia 830 and 730/5, Microsoft also announced the Lumia Denim firmware for its Nokia Lumia devices. It packs lots of – mostly camera related – features, like a much faster Lumia camera app or the “Hey, Cortana” feature. That was on IFA in Berlin – in September 2014!  Today is January 15th, 2015. Lumia denim began to roll out a few weeks ago and runs nicely on the devices that already received the update. Here in Germany I have the update on my Lumia 620 and it runs great. However, my Lumia 1520 has not received anything yet, and it has no carrier branding.  Several reports from Finland claim Lumia Denim is already running on Lumia 1520 phones in the Nordic country, which means the update is finished. Then why not make it public to everyone already? In the last few weeks after the first phones became able to install the update nothing happened and the user needed to wait longer. Today this has not changed.  I understand several phones need optimi...

WP8.1 GDR2 skipped, Windows Mobile 10 to be the next preview update.

Image
We have expressed our doubts about Microsoft skipping on Windows Phone 8.1 GDR2 earlier too and now it seems more or less confirmed.  As per our sources, Microsoft is going to push Windows Mobile 10 or Windows 10 Mobile preview to “Insiders” pretty soon. It will be announced during 21st event. This in fact is in line with the original schedule of Windows Phone 9 (Windows Mobile 10 now) that we had reported long time back.  GDR2 was supposed to be out in October but it was later scraped it seems and some of its tipped changes like “Mobile Data Toggle” and Cortana for more arrived with GDR1 version 8.10.14219.314.  Now, it seems the broader hardware support and other UI changes that GDR2 was supposed to bring will come with Windows Mobile 10 preview. So, GDR2 is mostly done away with unless there is some change in plans later. For your information GDR2 update has been ready for sometime now and skipping it means Microsoft has to do away need for “one more cycle of u...
